513- Sketchnote Artifact

This sketchnote provides an overview of the multimedia principle based on a cognitive theory that people learn more deeply from words and graphics than from words alone. This artifact includes the six graphic content types to teach and create an understanding for deeper learning.

The tool I used to create this sketchnote was Adobe's Illustrator Draw. With this free tool, Illustrator Draw, you really need for exporting purposes the Adobe Cloud with Adobe Illustrator and/or Adobe Photoshop. I found the program fun to work with, but I would have liked the ability to add text to the project through Illustrator Draw. I did evaluate and explore other tools such as Autodesk Sketchbook which does have the capability to add text, and Sketches which is a similar simple sketch program like Illustrator Draw. Nonetheless, I picked Illustrator Draw as it seemed the most intuitive, and since I already had the Adobe Cloud Suite, it seemed to be the most logical choice.

The purpose of the sketchnote below is to engage in active learning by connecting words and pictures. By applying the dual channel principle that learners have separate channels for processing verbal and pictorial material, and

by leveraging both channels the learner can foster a deeper cognitive processing of the information. Thus, creating a sketchnote is an excellent way to facilitate deeper learning.

This artifact meets the standard 3.1 Creating--Candidates create instructional design products based on learning principles and research-based best practices. The rationale of the project is that people are more likely to understand material when they can engage in active learning. By creating the sketchnote relevant cognitive processing occurs as a mental organization and integration of material, both words and graphics, occurs into a coherent presentation. It has been shown through research in 11 studies that words and pictures perform better when used in student learning as learning is facilitated when the graphics and text work together to communicate an instructional message.
